Last week was huge. Syrians all over the world celebrated one year since the fall of Assad’s regime. I joined from London together with other survivors from all over the world to mark this moment and demand that Assad be brought to justice.
So many of you were with us. More than 18,000 people have already signed the petition calling for the creation of a Syrian-led hybrid court to prosecute Bashar al-Assad and his officials for their crimes committed over 14 years of dictatorship. Thank you!
Survivors and activists spread the demand “Bring Assad to Justice” through a poster designed by award-winning artists Ranim AlHalaky and Kinda Ghannoum. They posted it on walls and cafes in cities around the world, from Berlin to Damascus and Homs to Amsterdam. It also ran on the back of a Syrian newspaper.
It was incredibly powerful to see people in communities that were just over a year ago unable to speak out in fear of reprisal, replacing the torn regime images of Assad with beautiful artworks demanding justice for his crimes.

Justice is vital because Assad has escaped it for so long. Together we must let world leaders know that holding criminals accountable, preserving memory and truth, acknowledging what happened, and ensuring such horrific crimes are never repeated are the pillars on which the new Syria should be built.
In solidarity,
Afraa
