Human rights group calls for independent investigation into field executions and mass killings in Syria
The Syria Campaign warns of grave human rights violations taking place in Syria’s coastal region, with security forces and pro-Assad militias carrying out mass executions and systematic killings. These crimes mark a dangerous escalation in violence following the collapse of the Assad regime.
Armed men loyal to the Assad regime reportedly killed 100 members of the interim government’s security force and 15 civilians on Thursday, and the security forces have killed 125 civilians in suspected revenge killings, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.
Human rights group The Syria Campaign is urgently demanding an end to all violence and for the interim government to allow an urgent independent investigation to be launched immediately, as well as swift access for humanitarian, documentation and media organisations to affected areas.
Razan Rashidi, Executive Director of The Syria Campaign said:
“Everyone is terrified that tensions are on the rise and the prospect for a peaceful transition hangs in the balance. It is vital that the interim government orders an immediate end to field executions, allows an independent investigation into the violence, ensures civilians are protected and peace is held so that crimes committed by members of the Assad regime are tried in a court of law. It has made many promises to the people of Syria and to the international community and now is the moment to back up their rhetoric with action.”
